One dead in blast at cracker unit in Virudhunagar

Virudhunagar: A 45-year-old man was killed in a cracker unit blast set off from unfinished crackers kept in a working shed at Muthulapuram here on Tuesday.

According to police sources, the cracker unit leased by Kamalraj had more than 50 working sheds which were licenced by the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation.



On Tuesday morning, when five employees including Mayazhagan went inside the unit the unfinished crackers went off with a loud noise. Mayazhgan was killed on the spot. Four others managed to run to safety.

Fire and rescue services personnel rushed to the spot and put out the fire. They recovered the body from the debris and sent it to the Virudhunagar government hospital for postmortem.

Based on a complaint given by the VAO of Kariseri village, Gurubagyam, the Amathur police registered a case against Kamalraj, manager Mumoorthy, foremen Nallusamy, Rajendran.

In a separate incident, a blast took place in a cracker unit at Poosarinayakanpatti at Sattur in the district on Tuesday evening.

The unit owned by Murugaraj is situated at Poosarinayakanpatti in Sattur taluk in the district. There are nearly 20 working sheds inside the cracker unit. On Tuesday evening, the employees who finished work left the unit.

When the foreman Arumugam was setting fire to the waste, a blast was triggered. A working shed was completely destroyed.

On information about this incident, fire and rescue services personnel from Sattur and Vembakottai rushed to the spot and put out the fire. The Vembakottai police have registered a case and are conducting investigations.
