One dead, two hurt in Meghalaya mishap

SHILLONG: A Meghalaya home guard volunteer was killed and two others were injured after a speeding vehicle rammed over the police barricade at Khliehtyrshi, Jowai Bypass in West Jaintia Hills district on Wednesday night, a police officer said on Thursday.

The driver of the vehicle, bearing an Assam registration number, Samim Ahmed Mazarbhuiya Cachar district, was arrested this morning after an extensive hunt throughout the night.

The vehicle was proceeding to Guwahati via Shillong from Silchar.

Superintendent of Police for West Jaintia Hills, Lakardor Syiem, said the policemen, who were manning the check point placed with drums and florescent barricades, signaled the driver of the vehicle to stop.

However, the driver, instead of stopping rammed the barricades and dragged on and in the process killed home guard volunteer Lucky Dhar and injured Havildar R Dkhar of 4th Meghalaya Police battalion and a civilian Danny Dkhar.

Havildar Dkhar has been referred to North East Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences, Shillong for further medical treatment.

Syiem said the driver fled the scene after the incident leading to a massive manhunt through the night.
