Only grassroots leader can turn CM, says EPS in dig at Stalin

VILLUPURAM: Reacting to DMK chief MK Stalin’s charge that he was an accidental chief minister, Edappadi K Palaniswami said he was wholeheartedly elected by 122 AIADMK MLAs.

He was campaigning for party candidate M R Muthamizhselvan contesting from Vikravandi at Mundiyambakkam in Viluppuram district .

Palaniswami said when DMK supremo M Karunanidhi was alive, he ensured that his son was not given any party post. It is Stalin who was accidentally elected DMK president, he said.

The chief minister said while Stalin and he were elected MLAs in 1989, the former won because of his father’s influence. “To be elected as chief minister one should be hardworking and grassroots-level leader like me,” he said.

Meanwhile, Stalin on Saturday urged people in Vikravandi assembly constituency to vote for the ‘rising sun’ in the upcoming bypoll to get all basic amenities. Addressing voters during his signature ‘thinnai pracharam’ at Stalin Nagar for party candidate N Pugalenthi, Stalin said the AIADMK was acting as the stooge for the BJP-led government at the Centre. “The EPS government, which is acting as a slave to Modi’s government, had shown interest to spruce up Mahaballipuram within a week for the Modi-Xi Jinping summit, but has failed to fulfil the basic needs of citizens.” he said.
