Opposition to sewage pumping station in Calangute

SALIGAO: Villagers of Gaura Vaddo, Calangute , have opposed the setting up of a sewage pumping station in their ward, claiming that it would not only overflow and stink after a few years, but would also contaminate wells.

On Friday, deputy speaker and Calangute MLA Michael Lobo and village sarpanch Shawn Martins, met the villagers and heard their objections.

Lobo had earlier instructed the company involved with the project to start work on the pumping station.

“This is not a sewage treatment plant. The sewage is needed to be pumped from this area to the plant. If this is not done, chambers will overflow and people will hold me responsible,” Lobo told the villagers, who suggested that the station could be constructed 150 metres away from the proposed site which lies close to the main road but within the boundaries of the same property.

Lobo has requested officials from the public works department to visit the site for the proposed sewage pumping station and put forth their suggestions in this regard.

In April, residents of Naika Vaddo had objected to the setting up of the pumping station in their ward, pointing out that the location was a residential area.
