Over 1,300kg cannabis recovered, five arrested

Varanasi: Field unit of Varanasi STF along with Narcotics Control Bureau, Lucknow caught five members of an interstate gang of drug peddlers in Rohaniya area on Thursday and recovered 1,320kg ganja (cannabis) worth Rs. 65 lakh from them. The arrested persons belong to Bihar and Jharkhand. They were booked under sections 8, 20, 29 and 60(3) of NDPS Act.



Acting on a tip off, the STF team led by inspector Punit Parihar stopped a truck (CG-07AA-3202) at Akhari over bridge bypass in Rohaniya area. Upon checking, the contraband was found concealed in a cavity made especially for this purpose.

The arrested persons were identified as Dadan Yadav, Udai Shankar Yadav, Dhruvnath Singh, all from Bihar, Jairam Vishwakarma and Surendra Mahato, both from Jharkhand. During interrogation, they disclosed that the consignment was given to them by one Golu, a big drug supplier of Odisha, to deliver it to Jatashankar Dubey and Monu Baba at Maharajganj Bazar in Aurai area of Bhadohi district.

The police said that truck owner Ravindra Singh of Raipur (Chhattishgarh) is also involved in drug smuggling. A special secret cabin was created in the truck for smuggling the contraband. He used to give Rs. 50,000 to the driver per trip. Further investigation is on.
