Over 400 applications for 238 shacks in North Goa

Cleared 230

Panaji: The tourism department has received over 400 applications to set up shacks along the coastal belt of North Goa alone. Tuesday was the last date to submit applications. There are 238 shacks up for grabs in North Goa with a majority located in Calangute (108) and Candolim (88).

The 108 shacks for Calangute are divided into six stretches or wards with a maximum of 25 allowed for Saunta Vaddo.

Other beach stretches that get shacks allotted in North Goa are Arambol, Anjuna, Vagator, Siridao, Ozrant and Chapora.

For South Goa beaches 108 shacks are slated to be allotted with a majority for beach stretches of Colva , Cavelossim and Benaulim.

While draw of lots for allotment of shacks was slated for Thursday, the high court has stayed it until further orders. The court will hear the matter on Friday.

A beach shack operator said he is looking to forward to setting up his shack by the end of the month, or latest by the first week of November but it appears there will be a further delay. The Nnational Green Tribunal had stayed the implementation of the beach shack policy 19-22 with Goa not finalising the coastal zone management plan.

He said it will more than a week to earmark space to set up shacks after the draw of lots. Only after that can operators start putting up temporary structures which takes a week or more.
