Over 5,000 displaced in Tripura

AGARTALA: Floods have marooned over 5,000 people in Tripura where incessant rain over the last two days has washed away a person and forced the administration to shift these people to around 25 relief camps set in different parts of the state. The deluge has severed road connectivity as national highways in North and South Tripura remain under water.

All the 10 major rivers in the state are flowing above the critical level mark, Sarat Das, state nodal officer of disaster management, said.

Besides Agartala, the major towns of Kailashahar, Kamalpur, Khowai, Sonamura, Udaipur, Belonia and Sabroom also remain under the threat of flooding as embankments built there are not enough to stop river water. Most parts of Agartala is also submerged and more than 2000 people have been evacuated so far. City administration has deployed at least 9 rescue boats for shifting the affected to higher areas.
