Panaji: Margao centre to service only 50 vehicles per day

PANAJI: To tackle the issue of serpentine queues at Arlem in Margao for the fitment of high security registration plates (HSRP), only 50 vehicles from Margao and Quepem will be taken up at the Arlem centre each day, initially.

This was decided after the hearing conducted at the transport department head office in Panaji , on Tuesday.

“The directorate of transport has told us to reduce the number of fitments per day. We will therefore be taking only 50 vehicles per day at the RTO Margao — 25 each from Quepem and Arlem. We will not restrict the number of bookings, however,” assistant general manager, Real Mazon India Ltd, Biswajeet Mukherjee, said.

The number of fitments may be increased to 100-150 per day after a periodic review, he said.

Sources said that this system will be followed until a new space is allotted for a fitment centre for Quepem-based vehicles at the multipurpose sports complex at Borimol.

Meanwhile, Arlem operations are likely to restart from Monday following the work order for resumption, transport officials said. “Following the resumption order, we will take only 50 vehicles at a time at the fitment centre. There will be also be separate cash collection counters (at the RTO) for general public, ladies, senior citizens and the physically handicapped so that there is no issue of queues,” Mukherjee said.

The contractor has requested the transport department to grant permission for a separate space in Mapusa for the fitment of HSRPs. Currently, fitment for vehicles from Panaji and Mapusa is being carried out at one centre based in Porvorim. “We don't have a new place to allocate to the contractor but they have entered an agreement with a Mapusa-based driving school. If they are willing to bear the financial implications, we will not object,” the transport official said.
