Panaji stuck on waterlogged roads

PANAJI: Torrential downpour for just over a couple of hours triggered one of the worst flooding in the state’s capital. Several areas of the city went under water, disrupting traffic and life for a few hours, as the rain coincided with the high tide between 1pm and 3pm.

Unprecedented inundation hit areas of Miramar and Caranzalem , 18th June Road, Patto, Mala and KTC bus stand, causing heavy loss to property, as water entered commercial establishments and houses, and damaged vehicles.

Submergence of roads caused a massive traffic jam on NH-66 on either side of Mandovi bridge , clogging movement on the old link.

The low-lying areas right from the entrance to the city, near Ambedkar Garden, to the traffic circle outside Kadamba Transport Corporation Ltd’s bus terminus were inundated. Vehicles had to move slowly or take diversions while pedestrians found it safer to avoid footpaths and drains and walk on the road instead.

The ground floor of the building opposite the Ambedkar garden was flooded. Customers were seen standing in water to book tickets at a travel agency’s office.

One of the city’s most vulnerable areas — Miramar circle and internal lanes in the surrounding areas —witnessed massive flooding with vehicles getting partly submerged. Water also entered compounds and some premises on the ground floor. With the rain intensity reducing after 3pm, citizens heaved a sigh of relief.

But operations to make channels and clear drains to facilitate the flow to the main water bodies and St Inez creek took a while.

The 18th June Road was also flooded, but water did not enter shops unlike a few days ago.

In nearby Mala, residents, who only a few days ago emptied their houses of flood waters, found themselves in a similar predicament yet again.

There was a landslide in the Boca de Vaca area in the vicinity of two houses, the occupants of which were asked to temporarily vacate their homes.

In the outskirts, in Taleigao, a car shed collapsed on vehicles.
