Panchkula traffic police to go paperless

PANCHKULA: By September, the local traffic police will be the Tricity’s first and Haryana’s second to go paperless when it gets 30 more e-challan machines. There will be instant fine, instant payment, before you have time to argue with the cop.

They started this service in November 2016 with eight devices, to let offenders pay their fines on the spot by cash or card.

Deputy commissioner of police (DCP) Deepak Gahlawat said: “Paperless traffic ticket will reduce hassles and save time. The headquarters approved our plan because it not only promises instant revenue collection but also cuts queue at the payment window.”

Earlier, if caught in Panchkula on way to Punjab or Himachal Pradesh, commuters from the other states had to wait in long queues, sometimes till the next day, at the traffic branch to pay the fines. They can clear their fines on the spot now and get on with their journey. Synched with the Vaahan online portal of the traffic police, the e-challan machine tells the cop instantly if the driver is a repeat offender. In that case, it even generates an automatic challan slip with extra penalty.

If the system detects a three-time offender, the driver’s license is cancelled in a moment.
