Patiala farmers, teachers accused government of cheating

PATIALA: Farmers on Tuesday staged a protest against the state and the Central government in Patiala at the grain market.

Farmers claimed that both the governments had failed to meet their promises and instead had befooled them before every election.

They also raised the issue of Swaminathan Report that the BJP promised in its election manifesto in 2014, but failed to fulfil the promise.

They demanded that early sowing of paddy crop should be allowed from June 1, complete loan waiver of farmers and farm labourers, decrease charges of power for electricity load required for motor connections, and compensation to the victim families of farmers who committed suicides.

They demanded Rs 5,000 old age pensions to farmers and farm labourers and free supply of irrigation water and electricity should be continued. Similarly, teachers also protested in Patiala over their demands, including review of the decision of monthly salary. The protesting teachers held a protest march in the district by raising black flags. They also raised anti-government slogans.

They marched into two villages, including Nandpur Kesho village and Balad Khurd village.

The teachers claimed that they had called off their protest in February this year after the government assured them to form a high-level committee to review the decision of monthly salary within 90 days, but nothing was done.

Davinder Punia, Adhyapak Sangarsh Committee, said the protest was to make Punjabis aware of the government’s indifferent attitude towards the education system in the state.

They also announced to Gherao the office of the Punjab education secretary, Krishan Kumar, on June 3 and 4.
