Patna: Trucks to ply on JP Setu at night from November 20

PATNA: In a bid to de-congest the southern periphery of Patna, caused due to 30-40km long queue of trucks, the state government has decided to allow movement of heavy vehicles at night on J P Setu and empty trucks on the Mahatma Gandhi Setu.

Besides, a pontoon bridge parallel to the Gandhi Setu will also be soon ready to provide an alternate route for movement of light motor vehicles between Patna and Hajipur.

All new arrangements will come into effect from November 20.

A meeting to discuss these issues was convened by chief secretary Deepak Kumar which was attended by senior officials of several departments concerned including the road construction and the transport departments among others.

Sharing the details of resolutions taken in the meeting, transport secretary Sanjay Kumar Agarwal told TOI, “For the past couple of weeks trucks laden with construction material used to get stuck up between Koelwar bridge near Ara and Gandhi Setu. This was basically due to restriction on movement of heavy vehicles on several bridges across the Ganga. In a bid to ease the situation, it has been decided that trucks going outside Patna will be allowed to cross the J P Setu between 10 pm and 5 am.”

He added, “It has also been decided that empty trucks will be allowed to pass through the Gandhi Setu, which is being rehabilitated at present. Besides, smaller trucks will be allowed to move on the setu with material laden on them.”

Movement of heavy vehicles carrying sand and stone aggregates was prohibited by the state government in May 2018 on both JP Setu and the Mahatma Gandhi Setu. Heavy vehicles like trucks and tractors are now going through either the newly-constructed Ara- Chhapra bridge or the Rajendra Setu in Mokama to cross the Ganga.

The pontoon bridge parallel to Gandhi Setu is dismantled with the rise in the water level of the Ganga and again installed once the water level recedes after the monsoon season. The bridge is mostly used by two wheelers, cars and autorickshaws to avoid the snarl on Setu
