PDKV, Mafsu swap lands for Akola veterinary college

Nagpur: In an interesting exchange between two universities in Vidarbha, Panjabrao Deshmukh Krishi Vidyapeeth (PDKV) in Akola will hand over 27 hectares land in Babulgaon (near Akola Airport) to Nagpur-based Maharashtra University of Fisheries and Health Sciences (Mafsu) for development of new undergraduate veterinary college in Akola.

In return, Mafsu will hand over 27 hectare land out of its huge cattle breeding farm at Borgaon Manju in Akola district to PDKV.

Mafsu already has a post graduate institute of veterinary and animal sciences in Akola. The new UG institute will be established in same premises as PG institute only. The land taken from PDKV will be used to establish farm complex necessary for animal husbandry college.

“The demand of starting UG veterinary institute in Akola is at least six years old. In 2016, state government sanctioned the college here. We had demanded land for the establishment of instructional livestock farm complex (ILFC). The issue was pending with state government for two years,” said Dr V D Aher, associate Dean of the PG Institute of Veterinary and Animal Sciences in Akola. Mafsu will now develop ILFC which will be useful for students of both PG and UG courses.

Mafsu vice-chancellor Dr Ashish Paturkar told TOI that UG institute will be an important step for veterinary education in Vidarbha. “Mafsu has UG institutes in Mumbai, Parbhani, Nagpur, Shirwal and Udgir. In Vidarbha, we have UG college only in Nagpur. College in Akola will bring new opportunities for youths in Vidarbha,” he said.

The state government had also sanctioned similar college for Muktainagar (north Maharashtra region). Process of establishment of this college is in final phase. With this, there will be seven government veterinary institutes in Maharashtra.
