Pension lure: Woman who duped widows held

Ahmedabad: Crime branch on Saturday nabbed a woman, Saidabibi Pathan, 34, of Umreth in Anand, who used to dupe poor and old women with the lure of widow pension benefits.

“We have recovered jewellery worth Rs 4,85,100 from her,” said in-charge deputy commissioner of crime branch, Rajdeepsinh Jhala.

Assistant commissioner of police, crime branch, B V Gohil, said police have detected seven cases in Shaherkotda, Vadaj, Bapunagar, Idar, Surendranagar, Nadiad and Vadodara after interrogating Pathan.

“The woman used to approach a widow and tell her that government has floated a widow pension scheme and take them to corporation’s north zone office near Shardaben Hospital and tell them to remove their jewellery before going inside. She would then flee with the jewellery,” said Gohil.

Earlier, she was arrested for 14 such offences in Gaekwad Haveli, Vatva, Dariapur, Shahpur, Vejalpur, Ghatlodia, Krishnanagar, Chankheda and Mumbai’s DB Marg police stations.
