Person with blessings of public serves better: Sachin Pilot

Jaipur: Deputy chief minister Sachin Pilot, while refusing to comment on high court’s notice to the state government for allowing non-elected persons to become mayor/chairperson of municipalities, on Thursday said a person occupying position of power “with people’s blessings” strengthens democracy and serves better.

The issue had snowballed into a major controversy after the deputy chief minister took a strong view against his own government’s decision of allowing non-councillors become mayors/chairpersons. The government fell in line after the Congress high command’s intervention and agreed that only in exceptional cases, where elected persons were not available in a reserved category, will a non-elected person be allowed to stand as mayor/chairperson.

According to the government, such a person need not contest the post of councillors after being elected to the top position. This has now been challenged in the high court.

Speaking to media on Thursday, Pilot said, “I am sure that the government will be able to give a satisfactory reply to the high court.” He added that he has always been of the view that all positions of power be occupied by elected persons.

He had created another controversy by giving all credit to the party organization for the success of Congress in the bypoll held to two assembly seats recently. The party had captured the Mandawa seat from BJP and narrowed down the defeat margin at Khinvsar seat.

Pilot said people are watching the government’s performance but the results in party’s favour are due to the party organization’s efforts. Pilot said, “I am proud of the party organization. The organization has been united in overcoming challenges in the past. The Congress government is in power due to the hard work of the workers. It was workers at the villages, hamlets bring people out of their homes and convince them to vote for the party.”
