PHED officer arrested for taking bribe in Baran dist

Kota: The Anti-Corruption Bureau ( ACB ) sleuths on Monday arrested an accounts officer in Public Health and Engineering Department (PHED) after he allegedly accepted a bribe amount of Rs 3,000 from a contractor of the department in Baran district. The accused accountant had demanded the bribe amount for releasing security amount of Rs 3 lakh, which the contractor had deposited prior to getting the work sanction letter.



The accounts officer identified as Shambudayal (57), a resident of Baran district, was arrested on Monday from his office after he had allegedly accepted the bribe amount of Rs 3,000 from a contractor of the department identified as Gulablal, a resident of Bundi district, said Gyanchand, ACB inspector, Baran.

The contractor had deposited Rs 3 lakh with PHED for carrying out departmental work worth Rs 20 lakh in the year 2018-2019. Following completion of the work, the contractor was paid for the work but the accounts officer refused to return the security amount and demanded bribe of Rs 3,000 for the purpose, the ACB inspector said.

On July 23, the contractor lodged a complaint with ACB, Baran, in this connection following which a verification of the complaint was carried out on the same day.

The accounts officer had called the contractor with the bribe amount at his office on Monday. A trap was laid and the ACB sleuths caught the accused red-handed as soon as he accepted the bribe amount, the ACB inspector said. The accused would be produced before an ACB court in Kota on Tuesday.
