Pilibhit, Kheri among 15 UP districts to get medical colleges

PILIBHIT: Fifteen Uttar Pradesh districts, including Pilibhit and Lakhimpur Kheri, will soon have medical colleges under the Central government’s ‘establishment of new medical colleges attached with existing district or referral hospitals’.

The information was divulged by UP principal secretary, revenue, Rajneesh Dubey, who has been given the additional charge of the chief secretary of medical education to the district magistrates of 15 districts, where one medical college each would be set up by upgrading existing district hospitals.

The other 13 district are Bijnor, Sultanpur, Mahoba, Kushinagar, Kaushambi, Kanpur Dehat, Hamirpur, Gonda, Chitrakoot, Chandauli , Balrampur, Balia and Amethi.

Following the state government’s proposal, district magistrate Vaibhav Shrivastav has identified a 13-acre state-owned plot in Shahi village under Pilibhit tehsil circle for the setting up of the proposed medical college’s campus. The DM dispatched the documents to the state administration on Wednesday.

According to DM, Dubey had on June 11 issued a letter to the DMs of all the 15 districts about the proposal, according which the proposed medical colleges would require an existing district hospital with a capacity of 200 beds and minimum campus area of five acres.

“As the proposed project also needs a 10 acres state land within 10km radius of the district hospital, the identified land in Shahi village, which is situated on Bareilly-Haridwar national highway, has been selected for the proposed medical college,” said the DM.

A detailed report on land and other relevant matters were dispatched to the state administration on Wednesday for the initiation of further proceedings, added the DM.

Asked about the beneficial features of the proposed medical college, chief medical superintendent, district hospital, Dr RP Singh said, “The medical college will bring with itself many crucial departments such as endocrinology, cardiology, neurology, nephrology, cancer, etc, which are virtually unavailable at the district hospital. Besides, patients will also get advanced methods of treatment, especially various types of surgeries.”

“At present, we refer critical patients to higher medical facilities outside the district, which is risky as serious or injured patients may die during the journey. The medical college will enable us save their lives without taking any apparent risk,” he said.

The medical college would also help tackle the situation of overcrowding of patients and over 30% of crunch of doctors, he added.
