Police seize 185kg brown sugar in Manipur

IMPHAL: Police on Saturday seized 184.644kg of brown sugar worth Rs 166 crore in the international grey market and implements used for making drugs in Thoubal district.


"This is the biggest haul of contraband drugs in the whole of the northeast," Thoubal SP Sachidananda Soibam said. The contraband was seized from the residential complex of Moijingmayum Md Muhammed (41) during a raid around 11.30 am in Moijing Awang Leikai area of the district.

"We carried out the raid with the help of Anjuman," Soibam said. Anjuman is a civil body set up by Muslims living at Lilong to fight against the drug menace and other anti-social activities. During the raid, police seized materials used for making contraband drugs, ammonium chloride, lime, a wooden pressing board machine, a metal clamp machine, three plastic drums, rubber gloves and a gas stove. The brown sugar was kept in different packets, he said. He added that a case has been registered and investigation is on.

Earlier, on June 29 this year, police had busted an illegal brown sugar factory and seized 111.915 kg of the contraband drug worth around Rs 100 crore at the Muslim-dominated Lilong in Thoubal district. The operation had been led by the Narcotics and Affairs of Border, a unit of Manipur Police, Thoubal Police and they were assisted by Anjuman.
