Police seize 324 litres of arrack in Nagapattinam, arrest one

NAGAPATTINAM: The prohibition enforcement wing (PEW) in Nagapattinam seized 1,800 packets of arrack from a house near Sirkazhi and arrested one person, here on Tuesday.


According to the police, the accused has been identified as J Babu, 38, of Thiruleka street in Sirkazhi in Nagapattinam district .

A police team headed by SI Suresh conducted a surprise raid at the house where they found the packets, each with a capacity of 180ml, of arrack stacked.

The accused had brought the arrack from Puducherry and made it ready for sale after mixing it with water before packing it in plastic sachets with the name ‘Pondi Juice’. Each packet weighing 180ml and would be sold to the sellers for Rs 25 each, who would in turn sell them for Rs 30 to Rs 35, police said. Around 1,800 packets were found stuffed in six gunny bags in a room.

The PEW sleuths led by inspector A Kaveriammal had arrested four people hailing from Nagapattinam and Kumbakonam last week. An arrack racket was bursted after a team of police raided a house at Udhaya Nagar in Kumbakonam in Thanjavur during the late hours on September 3. The raid brought to light illegal manufacturing of arrack.

The police managed to nab the owner of the unit Raj along with others who were working for him. The police interrogated them and found that the unit had been functioning in the rental house for the last six months.
