Poll battle for Huzurnagar seat heats up

HYDERABAD: The political contest in Huzurnagar Assembly constituency has begun even before the election commission has issued a notification for by-poll to this segment, vacated by TPCC president N Uttam Kumar Reddy after he won the Nalgonda Lok Sabha seat.

Uttam Kumar Reddy alleged G Jagadish Reddy, Telangana Energy minister had misused police force to threaten and implicate Congress workers in false cases and had subsequently forced them to join the ruling TRS.

He announced in a plethora of meetings with party workers that his wife Padmavathi Reddy will be the Congress candidate in the bye-poll and that they need not succumb to police pressure being exerted by the minister.

The Congress high command has not finalised any name for the Huzurnagar Assembly segment which is slated for by-poll.

Sources said Uttam announced his wife’s name to instill confidence among the cadre that the party and Uttam’s family will strongly stand by them in all times.

When contacted, Uttam confirmed that he has told the party cadre that Padmavathi is the likely candidate for Huzurnagar seat . Padmavathi had lost her sitting Kodad Assembly seat in December 2018 elections to the TRS while Uttam had won from Huzurnagar.

On the other hand, the ruling TRS is no mood to allow the Congress to retain this seat and minister Jagadish Reddy has taken upon himself of ensuring TRS’ victory when bypolls are conducted.

Additionally, Uttam alleged minister Jagdish Reddy was provoking violence in Huzurnagar constituency for his own political gains.

“It is unfortunate that Jagadish Reddy, who always speaks about the Statehood movement, is now supporting an Andhra leader in the constituency,” he said.
