Power still eludes Jagatsinghpur villages post Cyclone Fani

Jagatsinghpur: Even as the government claims to have fully restored power supply in Jagatsinghpur, many parts of the district are still in darkness post Cyclone Fani. Power has not been restored in these areas even after 14 days of the severe cyclonic storm that hit Odisha coast on May 3.

As per reports, residents of many villages and towns in Jagatsinghpur district are facing a lot of trouble as their areas are yet to be electrified.

With rising temperatures, things have turned even worse for these residents during night hours.

“It feels very hot as there is no power supply. We have to roam outside or either sleep on the terrace. There are a lot of mosquitoes and our children are falling sick,” said a local of Annagada village, Tarulata Pal.

Another local, Jharana Moharana said, “Hand fans cost about Rs100. Plus there are medical expenses as people are falling sick. Elderly are on the verge of dying in this heat.”

Throwing light on the status of power restoration, Executive Engineer, Jagatsinghpur Electicity Division, Jagdish Sahu said, “Jagatsinghpur district has been damaged in Cyclone Fani, particularly Biridi and Raghunathpur block have suffered extensive damage. After a lot of toil, we have restored power supply to 70 per cent area i.e. to 80,000 consumers in our division. Only Raghunathpur block is left out but it will also get power supply by today. All other block headquarters have received power. We will cover up to 85% by tomorrow. The rest will be restored within 4-5 days at max.”
