Powerful cyclone 'Maha' could knock Gujarat coast, Meteorological Department issued alert
AHMEDABAD: A very severe cyclonic storm may weaken and turn into a cyclonic storm before hitting the Gujarat coast near the Union Territory of Diu on Thursday. Due to this, heavy rains are expected in different parts of the state. Apart from this, there is a possibility of winds up to 90 km per hour.
The Meteorological Department has reported that according to the new forecast, the very severe cyclone is about 650 km west-southwest off the Porbandar coast and is located 700 km west-southwest of Veraval in the Arabian Sea. Through the bulletin, the department said that it is very likely to move towards East-North East and it will weaken rapidly. There is a possibility that it may become a cyclonic storm on the morning of November 7 and knock on the Gujarat coast near Diu. During this time, winds can run from 70-80 to 90 km per hour.
The cyclone is likely to receive light to moderate rainfall on most parts on 6 November and heavy rains are likely in some places. The department has said that when the 'Maha' cyclone hits the coast on November 7, heavy rains are expected on November 7 in Bhavnagar, Surat, Bharuch, Anand, Ahmedabad, Botad and Vadodara. Director of the Meteorological Center Jayant Sarkar said that it is expected that the cyclone may weaken further before hitting the coast.
