Process to reorganise J&K set in motion

SRINAGAR: The process of reorganising Jammu & Kashmir into two Union territories was set in motion on Thursday with the general administration department issuing an order to set up a full-fledged civil secretariat for Ladakh in Leh. The headquarters of the Ladakh affairs department will shift to Leh with immediate effect.




The commissioner secretary of the Ladakh affairs department, Rigzin Sampheal, will be stationed in Leh to oversee the transition of Ladakh into a Union Territory and the divisional commissioner, Leh, will report to him, the order states.

Ladakh will also have its own inspector general of police (IGP).

In line with the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act , 2019, the state administration on Thursday also notified the dissolution of the legislative council and directed its 116-strong staff to report to the general administration department by October 22.

The legislative council had functioned as the Upper House of the 87-member bicameral assembly .
