PSPL Agra bypoll candidate quits party day after polling

AGRA: In a major setback for Shivpal Yadav’s Pragatisheel Samajwadi Party Lohia (PSPL), it’s Agra North nominee for the assembly bypolls, Dileep Baghel, resigned from the party on Monday , a day after the polling.

Baghel said he had decided to part ways with Shivpal as he received no support from him or the party during his election campaign.

Talking with TOI, Baghel said, “None of the party leaders supported him during campaigning.” He said there is no point of staying in the party whose leaders do not care about their candidates who are contesting elections for the party.

Terming the allegations leveled by Baghel as “ baseless”, PSPL spokesperson Deepak Mishra said, “If the party leaders did not support him, why would they have chosen to field him.”

Agra North assembly bypolls, conducted on Sunday, registered a low turnout of 39.45% voters as against 58.21% in the 2017 assembly polls. This assembly constituency has 4.09 lakh registered voters.

The byelection was necessitated following the demise of five-time BJP MLA Jagan Prasad Garg . The main contest is between BJP, Congress and SP. BJP has fielded Purushottam Khandelwal, who is the state party unit vice-president, while Congress has fielded veteran party worker Ranveer Sharma (60). Samajwadi Party has opted for a political greenhorn but a passout of Wales's Cardiff University, Suraj Sharma. Suraj is the son of BSP’s former MLA Madhusudan Sharma who joined Samajwadi Party before the 2017 assembly polls.
