Pune: Despite being one of the worst-affected cities in the Covid-19 pandemic, the Pune Smart City Development Corporation Limited secured the 13th rank in India and the 1st spot in Maharashtra, owing to its performance in completing the smart city projects.

Sanjay Kolte, CEO of Pune Smart City told The Indian Express, “The Pune smart city ranking was 17 in the country before the lockdown. The city smart has been able to implement various on-going projects and started Health Management Information System to assist the Pune Municipal Corporation in containing Covid during the pandemic. The ranking has improved to 13 now.”

Pune’s jump in the rankings has also helped the state’s rank go up.

Mayor Murlidhar Mohol said that they are hopeful that the ranking would further improve in future and the corporation has speeded up the work of the on-going projects. He said, “It has been contributing towards containment of Covid in the city by setting up a command and control war room.”

National Smart Cities Mission is a renewal program for urban areas by the Indian government with the aim to develop smart cities in the country to make them citizen-friendly. The Union Ministry of Urban Development implements this program in collaboration with the state governments.

This mission aims to develop an area within a city as a model area based on a particular development plan. Cities are selected based on the Smart Cities Challenge. Each city creates a Special Purpose Vehicle, headed by a full-time CEO, to implement and look into the mission.
