Punjab education board to deliver textbooks in time: Chairman

CHANDIGARH: After facing a wrath for delay in publication and distribution of textbooks in the past few years, Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) has assured of delivering the textbooks for academic year 2019-20 in time.

A total of 40 lakh new textbooks have been published in 10 regional departments of the board while the remaining 10 lakh textbooks will be ready in the next 10 days.

To streamline distribution of books, the board would start five more regional depots by April.

Board chairman Manohar Kant Kalohia on Wednesday conducted a review meeting to take stock of the progress. Kalohia said a total of textbooks of 332 titles will be sold in the next academic year, of which 282 have been supplied to the 10 regional depots located at Amritsar, Bathinda, Hoshiarpur, Jalandhar, Mohali, Moga, Pathankot, Patiala, Rupnagar, Patiala, SBS Nagar.

Kalohia said apart from improving the quality of textbooks, a special focus has been given to timely distribution for which 5 more depots are being started in Fatehgarh Sahib, Gurdaspur, Muktsar, Ludhiana and Sangrur. The books will be sent from these depots and the work will be completed by March 15. The details regarding availability of books at these depots is on board’s website www.pseb.ac.in.

After using chemically-treated recycled papers in the textbooks for two years, the board used environment-friendly paper in the new academic session of 2019-20. The new textbooks have been printed on maplitho virgin pulp paper. The board has to get the textbooks for all subjects printed and distributed among the students of Classes I to X. For students of Classes XI and XII, the board only publishes language books. Over 23 lakh children study in around 24,000 government schools in Punjab.
