Punjab gangster killed in encounter with police in Sirsa

CHANDIGARH: A gangster was gunned down while his associate was arrested during an encounter with the Haryana Police in Chautala village of Sirsa district on the intervening night of Friday and Saturday.

Gangster Jungsher Singh was facing charges in at least 31 criminal cases.

The gangster along with two of his associates - Lakhwinder Singh and Sandesh Bishnoi - were planning to flee in an SUV they had looted from Karan, the son of JJP leader Ameer Chand Chawla when the police cornered them.

The trio headed towards Sangariya in Rajsthan. Police said that soon after the incident, Karan alerted the police control room and police teams were sent to nab the accused.

One of the police teams managed to catch Sandesh Bishnoi.

Meanwhile, another police party was chasing Jangsheer and Lakhwinder.

"They were speeding and opened fire when they saw a police check post near Chautala village on Sangaria road. Police parties too fired in retaliation. Meanwhile, their vehicle hit a tree. Lakhwinder managed to escape from the spot while Jagsheer was found injured inside the vehicle. He was hit by a bullet in the head. He was rushed to the Civil Hospital and was later referred to Maharaja Aggarsain Medical College of Agroha," said Sirsa SP Arun Singh.

Jangsheer succumbed to his injuries on Saturday afternoon. We have now requested for the magisterial inquest. Once the inquest is done, we shall be able to confirm as to whether he died in retaliatory fire or by his own weapon, Singh added.

Two weapons have been recovered from their possession and the looted vehicle as well as the vehicle used in looting the SUV too has been recovered, said police.
