Punjab: Major crackdown on power thieves in Ludhiana city

LUDHIANA: In a major crackdown on the power thieves in city, enforcement wing along with senior officials of Punjab state Power Corporation limited (Pspcl) had conducted anti-theft operation drive on Tuesday morning hours at Dairy Complex area in Haibowal and inspected as many as 1,227 power connections to verify the working of electricity meters.

Officials of the power corporation had detected as many as 20 theft cases during this massive action and charged the offender's with heavy penalties.


Giving more information on this, DPS Grewal , Director Distribution of Pspcl, said “following the direction of high rank officials ( Venu Parsad ), local officials of pspcl has constituted a team of 36 officials ((16 Distribution XEN, 16 SDOs and 4 Enforcement Wing) from various department to conduct the massive raid on premises of diary owners in the Haibowal area of business city and detected 20 Power theft cases which were involved in the case of violating electricity department norms and consuming heavy amount of electricity by using electricity by using illegal means ".

“Pspcl officials had imposed the penalties of Rs 40 lakh on the different violators and snapped their power supply for further course of action”. “During raid, pspcl officials found that display screens of as many as 44 meters were tampered and a total 73 old meters were not functioning properly, were replaced on the spot and these were sent to ME Lab for testing”.

Chief engineer of central zone, Virinderpal Singh, said that “PSPCL will continue to conduct the systemic raids in the near future to curb the menace of power thefts in the city and to ensure that residents are free from glitches of such unscrupulous practices. He appealed that consumers have to help PSPCL in controlling the menace of power theft”.

He added that in case of any complaint regarding power supply consumers can get their complaints registered on our helpline number 1912. “If the line is busy, the consumers can SMS to 1912 and your complaint will get automatically registered and you will receive a reply from the office,” he said.

Sources in pspcl department informed that “the demand of power supply in district limits has reached almost double in summer season due to excessive use of voltage on high intensive cable, which resulted in power failure in several localities of city so to overcome such issues this service begun in city” ."cases of illegal connections and meter tampering were witnessed in excess number during summer days because people remained in search of getting low down the amount of electricity bills while using unlawful affairs”, sources told to us.
