Punjab's AQI improves as crop fires decline

Patiala: With stubble paddy burning edging towards an end, the ambient air quality of Punjab improved to moderate category on Saturday.

Only 25 cases were reported across the state on Saturday — 18 in Patiala, none in Ludhiana and Fatehgarh Sahib and one from Rupnagar — taking the total tally of active fire incidents to 48,805.

Last year, 47,741 cases had been reported till November 16.

So far, the maximum number of cases (6,571) have been reported from Sangrur, followed by Bathinda with 5,527 cases. Ferozepur stood third with 4,538 cases while 3,927 cases were recorded in Patiala.

On Saturday, the ambient air quality in Amritsar was recorded at 158 ugm/m3 and 159 ugm/m3 in Ludhiana. Khanna recored 117 ugm/m3, Mandi Gobindgarh 148 ugm/m3, Patiala 112 ugm/m3. In Rupnagar, it touched 160 ugm/m3, while Bathinda witnessed 156 ugm/m3 — all in moderate category.
