1. Jamnagar Boy Scores 499 in CBSE, Makes It to Top-13

A Jamnagar boy topped the state, making it to the top 13 in the list of students who scored 499 in Class 10 CBSE exams. It was a moment of pride for Aryan Jha, a student of Nand Vidya Niketan school in Jamnagar after he was featured in the list of toppers released by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).

Another student to put Jamnagar on the list, Ayushi Shah from KD Ambani school scored 497 marks. She was featured in the list of top 97 students across the country. A total of 13 students all over India received 499/500 marks or 98.8 per cent.

The results declared Monday afternoon recorded an increase of nearly 5 per cent in over all pass percentage. This year, 91.1 has been recorded as the pass percentage as against 86.07 per cent last year. Girls yet again outshone boys with 2.31 per cent.

2. Guj CM Stresses on Reducing Dependency on Narmada Water

Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani on Monday, 6 May, stressed on the need for reducing dependency on water received from Narmada project as well as ground water sources.

During a review meeting held in Gandhinagar on Monday on water availability in the state, Rupani told officials to implement a system wherein treated or recycled water is used by industrial units, in agriculture, for gardening or to fill ponds in cities, said an official release.

"To reduce dependency on ground water as well as Narmada water, the CM asked the administration to ensure the share of treated or recycled water reaches 75 per cent of total water supply in the next one to two years," the release said.

3. For Spitting, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation Fines 330, Most in East Zone

As part of a cleanliness and anti-spitting drive, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is issuing on-the-spot challans and online memos. Since 29 April, the civic body has issued 105 notices against people who were caught urinating in public and 330 notices for spitting in public.

Of the total challans issued, the highest was in the east zone for open urination and spitting. The civic body has served notice to 62 people for urinating and 131 notices for spitting in public places.

A press release issued by the Solid Waste Management Department said that they have collected Rs 34,900 in fines from seven zones and handed notices to 330 offenders. For public urination, they have collected Rs 10,600 in fines and issued notices to 105 people.

4. Guj HC Seeks State Govt's Response to PIL Against Pilgrimage Devp Board

The Gujarat High Court on Monday, 6 May, directed the state government to respond to a PIL which termed "unconstitutional" the latter's decision to develop only Hindu pilgrimage sites through Gujarat Pavitra Yatradham Vikas Board since it was set up in 1997.

The division bench of acting Chief Justice Anant S Dave and Justice Biren Vaishnav directed the government to file its reply by 14 June, stating why it has not included pilgrimage sites of religions other than Hinduism for development through the board.

Petitioner Mujahid Nafees had filed a PIL in October 2018, through his lawyer K R Koshty, contending that setting up the Pavitra Yatradham Board was illegal as it only promoted pilgrimage sites of Hinduism.

The state government had earlier sought time to file its reply.

5. In Gujarat 99,479 Students Get Admission Under RTE

More than 99,000 students were given admission in the first round by the state government under the Right to Education (RTE) Act on Monday, 6 May. The students will have to confirm their admission in respective schools by submitting documents till 13 May.

MI Joshi, director, primary education said, "This year, the response of RTE has been massive. We received 1,93,630 applications for 1.15 lakh seats across the state out of which 1,90,049 applications confirmed whereas 1772 were rejected and 1809 were found to be duplicate. There are nearly 1,18,110 seats in 10,180 schools. We are yet to compile district wise data of admissions."

The admission process for RTE begun last month after which the state government had extended the date for online application process owing to polling in the state. The department had extended the last date of online application as many parents faced difficulty in submitting income certificates.
