QChennai: DMK, AIADMK, PMK Announce Candidates for Lok Sabha Polls

1. Kanimozhi Figures in DMK's List of LS Candidates Kanimozhi will be crossing swords with the Bharatiya Janata Party’s candidate in Thoothukkudi.

Tamil Nadu's DMK announced Rajya Sabha member Kanimozhi Karunanidhi will be its candidate from Thoothukudi constituency as it released its list of 20 candidates for the 18 April Lok Sabha polls.

The party will also field former Union Ministers TR Baalu, A Raja, Dayanidhi Maran and SS Palanimanikkam from Sriperumbudur, Nilgiris, Chennai Central and Thanjavur constituencies, respectively. The DMK will contest in 20 Lok Sabha seats in Tamil Nadu and the balance 20 (19 in Tamil Nadu and the lone Puducherry seat) have been allotted to its various electoral allies including the Congress, the Communist Party of India-Marxist and the MDMK.

2. AIADMK Releases List of Constituencies for LS Polls The ruling AIADMK on Sunday released the list of Lok Sabha constituencies that the party and its allies would contest from in the upcoming general elections.

The AIADMK said it will contest from 20 seats: Salem, Namakkal, Krishnagiri, Erode, Karur, Tiruppur, Pollachi, Arani, Thiruvannamalai, Chidambaram, Perambalur, Theni, Madurai, Nilgiris, Tirunelveli, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram and Chennai South.

Notably, the AIADMK currently holds 37 of the 39 seats in Tamil Nadu. The PMK has been allotted seven seats: Dharmapuri, Villupuram, Arakkonam, Cuddalore, Chennai Central, Dindigul and Sriperumbudur. The Bharatiya Janata Party will contest from five seats: Kanyakumari, Sivaganga, Coimbatore, Ramanathapuram and Thoothukudi.

3. Accident Victim Awarded Rs 17 Lakh Compensation
Kerala High Court said that the attire has been fixed by the Bar Council of India. 

Almost six years after a lorry accident caused a 30-year-old daily wage labourer grievous injuries, the Motor Accident Claims Tribunal directed the insurance company and the owner of the lorry to provide compensation of Rs 17 lakh to the labourer. Raja, working as a construction labourer, met with an accident near Maduravoyal in 2013.

Seeking compensation, he submitted that the accident caused serious injuries with 70 percentage of disability and a medical certificate was submitted at the tribunal. Despite summons, the insurance firm’s counsel and the vehicle owner didn’t appear at the tribunal. However, the tribunal considering the disability certificate and the other documentary evidence, concluded that the rash and negligent driving of the tanker lorry led to the accident.

4. Kapaleeswarar Temple Chariot Festival Draws Large Crowds The Arubathimoovar festival will be held on Monday, for which traffic changes have been made in the area.

The annual car/chariot festival of the Kapaleeswarar temple in Mylapore was held on Sunday, with thousands of devotees and eager visitors witnessing the majestic car making its way through the mada streets.

or annual Brahmotsavam, when idols of 63 Shaivite Nayanmars will be brought out in procession, will be held on Monday, for which traffic changes have been made in the area. This draws the biggest crowd during the Peruvizha that concludes with the Thirukalyanam. The festival is a busy time for residents of Mylapore, who come together to celebrate it with great gusto.

5. Probe Unearths MNC’s Financial Fraud, Vat Evasion As things went out of control and coming to know of the fraud played on them, the investors approached police.

A probe by the Chennai city police into a financial fraud has blown the lid off a major tax evasion racket indulged in by a private firm, which may run into crores of rupees. The fraud involves senior executives of ‘Philips India Limited - Personal Health,’ one of whom was made a scapegoat has turned approver and implicated the company.

The fraud involves the MNC enticing a few traders in Chennai to invest money in promoting sales of Philips healthcare products on the promise of making them distributors. This was done to help the existing distributors tide over their financial crunch and lift stocks that were stuck in their warehouses.
