QCrime: Robbers Flee With ATM; 84-Year-Old Raped and Killed

1. 84-Year-Old Gurdaspur Woman Raped, Strangled by Farm Labourer

An 84-year-old woman was raped and killed by a 25-year-old Nepalese farm labourer when she was alone at her house at Kotli Harchanda village of Gurdaspur district on Monday night, 18 March.

Police have booked the accused, identified as Satinder Raut under sections 302 (murder), 376 (rape) and 452 (house trespass after preparation for hurt, assault or wrongful restraint) of the Indian Penal Code.

2. Jalandhar ASI Shoots Wife, Kills Self

A Punjab Police assistant sub-inspector (ASI) shot his wife before killing self with his service revolver on Tuesday, 19 March. Gurbaksh Singh (45), and his wife Vandana Bhardwaj (41), residents of Dashmesh Nagar near Rama Mandi, are survived by their two children.

Deputy commissioner of police (investigation) Gurmeet Singh said Gurbaksh was posted with the Punjab Armed Police (PAP). Family members and neighbours believe that the incident was a fallout of a domestic dispute.

3. Chopped Finger of Man Who Stabbed 3 Helps Catch Him

The chopped finger of a man who had stabbed three passengers in a bus in west Delhi’s Vikaspuri on Sunday, led to his and his associate’s arrest, police said on Tuesday, 19 March.

The suspect, 24-year-old Rahul, had accidentally chopped off his right hand index finger while stabbing the passengers, said Monika Bhardwaj, Deputy Commissioner of Police (west). Police recovered the finger from the floor of the bus.

“The fingerprint was matched with that of Rahul who faces four cases of robbery and snatching,” said the DCP.

4. One Held for Property Dealer’s Murder, Wanted to Kill His Partner Instead

Over two weeks after a 52-year-old property dealer was shot dead inside his office in Rohini by a ‘masked man’, police have arrested a 21-year-old man from Jind, Haryana, for the crime.

DCP (Rohini) SD Mishra said the murder was a case of ‘mistaken identity’ as the accused, Deepak Sharma, wanted to kill the victim Sanjeev Sharma’s business partner.

Police said that on 1 March, Deepak parked his bike outside Sanjeev’s office in Rohini’s Begumpur, barged into his office and shot him dead, assuming Sharma to be the man he wanted to eliminate. A minor was also present in the office when the incident took place, police said.

5. Electrician Shot at By Wedding Crasher

A 22-year-old man was shot at, allegedly by a ‘wedding crasher,’ at a community hall in northeast Delhi’s Welcome on Monday night, 18 March. According to police, the accused, Shariq, crashed the wedding and allegedly got into an argument with the relatives of the bride, who accused him of theft.

“The incident took place around 10 pm. The accused was accompanied by more people. Following the altercation, he fired in the air, but the bullet hit a 22-year-old electrician who was fixing something,” said DCP (Northeast) Atul Kumar Thakur.

6. Robbers Flee With Entire ATM Machine in Dwarka

Robbers fled with an entire ATM machine of the Corporation Bank which had around Rs 30 lakh inside near the Nawada metro station in Dwarka, police said on Tuesday, 19 March.

Police said the incident took place on the intervening night of Monday, 18 March, and Tuesday, 19 March, and the robbers covered the CCTV cameras with grease.

The bank's branch manger filed a complaint on Tuesday in which he said the bank operates from 9 am to 9 pm and the same schedule was followed by them on Monday.

7. Four Arrested for Harassing Journalist Barkha Dutt Online

Delhi Police’s cyber crime cell has arrested three men from Delhi and one from Gujarat’s Surat in connection with an FIR filed by journalist Barkha Dutt, after she faced trolling and harassment on social media and via text.

On 21 February, Dutt had registered an FIR with the cyber cell stating that she was receiving threatening phone calls, messages, WhatsApp calls and obscene pictures from unknown people.

8. Snatcher’s Luck Runs Out in Police Station

“Hello, my mobile phone has been snatched. They are on a white motorcycle,” said Yogesh Sharma after dialling 100, seconds after being held at knifepoint in northeast Delhi’s New Usmanpur.

As a team was directed to that area, another PCR call came to Jyoti Nagar police station. This time, the caller reported that his white motorcycle had been stolen. Both the complainants had given the same description of the motorcycle.

To solve the mystery, both were called to the police station. Sharma immediately identified the second complainant, a 16-year-old, as the person who had snatched his phone.

9. FIR Filed After Injury to 2-Year-Old Girl’s Fingers

An FIR of negligence has been registered in an incident in which a two-year-old girl injured her fingers when a Delhi Metro employee allegedly shut the door of a ticket vending machine (TVM) on her hand at Uttam Nagar metro station earlier this month. The child had to undergo surgery to stitch back her fingers.

The child’s father, Amit Saxena, claimed that they were not provided any assistance by DMRC officials, apart from first aid. The employee who had allegedly shut the door on the child’s hand is being questioned.
