QKolkata: Left Announces LS Names; SC Allows Bhobhishyoter Bhoot

1. Ensure Unhindered ‘Bhobishyoter Bhoot’ Screening: Supreme Court

The Supreme Court on Friday directed Bengal’s chief secretary, home secretary and director-general of police to ensure unhindered screening of Bhobishyoter Bhoot, a political satire that was pulled out of city cinemas a day after it was released on 15 February.

A bench of Justices D.Y. Chandrachud and Hemant Gupta, which passed the order, said once the Central Board for Film Certification (CBFC) had cleared a film, no authority could restrict its screening.

Any attempt at stalling the screening would violate the fundamental right to free speech and expression guaranteed under Article 19 of the Constitution.

2. In Bengal, Left Unwraps ‘Partial’ List

The Left Front on Friday announced a “partial list” of 25 Lok Sabha candidates for Bengal, keeping the door ajar for more seat-sharing talks with the Congress.

After a meeting of Left partners, Front chairman Biman Bose issued a statement that contained the 25 names, their constituencies and the possibility of friendly contests with the Congress.

The Forward Bloc, RSP and the CPI will contest their nine traditional seats. “The Front partners used to get 10 seats, but this time, the RSP agreed not to put up a candidate from Behrampore to honour seat-sharing with the Congress, which will field Adhir Chowdhury,” said a source.

3. KMC Starts FOB Health Audit After Mumbai Tragedy

The collapse of the foot overbridge (FOB) near the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus in Mumbai has prompted the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) to call for an immediate health audit of all FOBs in the city.

Worried over the FOBs’ stability — some of them constructed more than 35 years ago — the civic structural engineers want them to undergo comprehensive tests to prevent any untoward incident. The civic authority has even listed some of them as ‘vulnerable’.

4. Serious Task Calling, Mimi Drops Comedy

Tollywood actress Mimi Chakraborty, who will contest from Jadavpur as a Trinamul Congress candidate in the Lok Sabha elections, has “stepped down” from Birsa Dasgupta’s film Bibaho Obhijaan, whose shoot begins soon.

Speculations on her availability for the film had been ripe since chief minister Mamata Banerjee announced Mimi’s name as a Trinamul candidate on Tuesday.

The actress put all speculations to rest with a tweet on Friday morning.

5. Now, 8 Buildings Off Bypass Come In Way Of Airport-New Garia Metro Corridor

The Airport-New Garia Metro corridor has hit a fresh hurdle. Eight buildings opposite Captain Bheri on EM Bypass have come in the way of the project.

Since last October, Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), the agency implementing the 32km Metro link, has managed to build nearly 200 metres of viaduct — from piers 302 to 309 — opposite Captain Bheri. They are now stuck at this point because of these eight structures, including a fourstorey building. Most of these buildings were built before the alignment was notified in October 2011.

6. 10 Passengers Hurt As Racing Buses Collide On VIP Road

Ten people, including three women, were injured when two Ultadanga-bound private buses racing each other collided in Kestopur on Friday morning. The injured were taken to a local private hospital and their condition was stated to be stable. Police have seized one of the vehicles and arrested its driver.

According to locals, two buses on routes KB 21 and 44 had been racing for a while and the former was trying to overtake the route 44 bus around 7am when they crashed. The passengers were flung off their seats on impact and several of them sustained injuries. The drivers had tried to flee the spot after the collision, but they were caught by locals and handed over to the police.

7. Another Nor’wester Lashes City, Met Predicts 2 More In 48 Hours

A thunderstorm lashed Kolkata with a wind speed of 59 km/ hr on Friday evening, triggering a drizzle that lasted about half-an-hour at the end of a warm and cloudy day when the maximum temperature touched 33°C. Even though the storm lasted less than a minute and didn’t qualify as a squall, it brought the mercury down. The Met office has predicted more thunderstorms over the weekend.

A cyclonic circulation over Odisha led to Friday’s storm and rain. “It drew in moisture from a high-pressure zone above Bay of Bengal and led to the storm. Since the circulation hasn’t moved much, it could continue to form more clouds over the next 48 hours. We expect another thunderstorm on Saturday and a stronger one on Sunday,” said Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) director GK Das.
