1. Accused Must Appear in Court Once a Week Says Special NIA Court

A special court hearing the 2008 Malegaon blasts, which killed six people, on Friday directed all the accused, including Pragya Singh Thakur and others, to attend the hearing once in a week, as the prosecution is likely to call crucial witnesses.

The directions were for all the accused, including Thakur, who is the BJP’s candidate from Bhopal.

2. Light Pollution Plea Puts Focus on Health Hazards

Following a petition to curb light pollution from a Mumbai-based IT professional, the Union environment ministry has said it will study the impact of light pollution and address the problem. International studies have found light pollution affects the health of humans and other forms of life adversely.

Chira Bazar resident Nilesh Desai submitted a 60-page document to the environment ministry in the first week of May, highlighting areas with high levels of light pollution in Mumbai and urging the formulation of comprehensive light pollution norms in India.

3. Central Railway to Shut Unsafe Kalyan FOB

Central Railway (CR) will shut the foot overbridge (FoB) connecting Kalyan station to Lokgram on the east on Saturday at midnight, as it was declared unsafe in the audit report led by Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay. The 313.84-m long and 3.66-m wide FoB is the only direct access for east-west connectivity for the 50,000-60,000 residents of Lokgram in Kalyan (East).

Although the bridge will be shut from Saturday midnight, CR has not announced when the repairs will take place and when the FoB will be reopened.

4. Aarey’s Tribals Set to Battle for Rights Over Land, Seek to Use FRA

Battling to protect their identity and land, tribal inhabitants of hamlets inside the 3,000-acre Aarey Colony in Goregaon are preparing to map the area they occupy and cultivate, in order to file claims for individual and community rights under the Scheduled Tribes and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act, 2006, better known as the FRA.

Next week, a few dozen residents will undergo training on the FRA, the processes to be followed ahead of filing claims and documentation they will require to append to their claims.

5. Actor Karan Oberoi’s Bail Plea Rejected

A sessions court on Friday rejected the bail application of actor Karan Oberoi, who was booked for the alleged rape of a 34-year-old woman in Mumbai.

Oberoi was arrested on May 5 after the woman, a fashion designer and healer, submitted the complaint to Oshiwara police and an FIR was registered under section 376 (rape) of IPC.
