Raigad (Maharashtra) Election 2019: Anant Geete aims to extend winning streak

The Raigad Lok Sabha seat went to polls in the third phase of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections on April 23. The current sitting Member of Parliament (MP) and Shiv Sena leader Anant Geete has won both the elections that have taken place in the constituency since its creation, and he is in the fray yet again seeking a third term. The Nationalist Conference Party (NCP) had fielded its 2014 elections runner up Sunil Tatkare to take on Geete once again while Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi's (VBA) Suman Koli is also in the fray.

The Raigad Lok Sabha seat was created in 2008 and in its first ever Lok Sabha elections in 2009, the electorates of Raigad elected Anant Geete of the Shiv Sena as its first-ever MP. Geete won the contest by a big difference of votes in 2009, but when he retained the seat in 2014, his winning margin sharply decreased.

In the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, Anant Geete received 4.13 lakh votes at 53.89 per cent vote share while Congress leader AR Antulay stood at the second place with 2.67 lakh votes at 34.80 per cent vote share. Independent candidate Pravin Thakur was third with 39,159 votes to his name.

Later in the 2014 elections, Geete narrowly edged out Sunil Tatkare of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) to become the Raigad MP. Geete received 3.96 lakh votes at 40.11 per cent vote share while Tatkare missed out with 3.94 lakh votes to his name at 39.89 per cent vote share. PWP's Bhai Ramesh Kadam came at the third spot with 1.29 lakh votes.
