Railway officer in UP throws biscuits at migrants, shouts at them; suspended after video goes viral [Watch]

Lucknow: At a time when the Centre is making an all-out effort to mitigate the difficulties faced by the migrants and poor due to Covid-19 crisis, a video has surfaced on social media showing a senior Railway officer throwing biscuits at some migrant workers on board a Shramik Special train.

In the widely-circulated video, DK Dixit, the chief inspector of ticket and some other Railways officials can also be seen shouting at the migrants while distributing packets of biscuits to them at a railway station in Uttar Pradesh’s Firozabad.

"The biscuits are being distributed because it's Mr Dikshit's birthday,” one of the officials can be heard saying in the video.

The three-minute video clip invited fierce reaction on social media, prompting the suspension of the senior officer who was leading the team.

"Strict disciplinary action has been taken again these railway employees including the suspension of the CIT DK Dixit," the Railways tweeted after the clip drew flak.

In the video, some migrants can be seen asking for biscuit packets, to which an employee says: "Abhi to diya. Baant ke khao (We just gave one. Share and eat)"

Scores of migrant workers stranded in several parts of the country due to coronavirus lockdown are being ferried to their native states in Shramik Special trains being run by the Central government since May 1.

Ever since the country went into lockdown from March 25 amid coronavirus crisis, several migrant workers, with no job in hand, have been facing hardships due to lack of food and money.

SC takes note of migrants crisis

Earlier this week, the Supreme Court asked all states not to charge fare from migrant workers stranded across the country for travel either by train or bus. The to court also directed that they be provided food and water.

Passing interim directions, the apex court said all migrant workers who are stranded at various places shall be provided food by concerned states and Union Territories (UTs) at places which shall be publicised and notified to them for the period they are waiting for their turn to board a train or a bus, PTI reported.

Earlier today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that migrants and poor are worst-hit by coronavirus, sserting that the government is making every effort to mitigate people's problems in this time.

"There is no section in our country that is unaffected by the difficulties caused by the disease. However, the worst affected are the poor and the labourers. Their pain, their agony, and their ordeal can't be expressed in words," he said in his monthly radio programme 'Mann ki Baat'.
