Rain in north Karnataka: Conditions worsen in Yadgir, Raichur

HUBBALLI: Normal life continued to be affected in five districts of north Karnataka and three districts of Malnad, as rain lashed the regions and rivers continued to run in spate.


Rescue teams on Monday worked to evacuate people from flood-hit regions around Krishna river in Bagalkot. With the river threatening to breach its banks, officials have declared a high alert in areas along the river in Bagalkot and Vijayapura.

However, no major damage was reported from Vijayapura. Villages of Jamkhandi taluk and Surpali , Tubachi, Muttur, Kankavadi and Nandagav villages of Mudhol taluk were affected.

Increased inflow into Krishna has turned Sharpali and Muttur villages in Jamkhandi and Nandagaon in Mudhol, Bagalkot district into islands. A holiday has been declared for schools in Nandagaon, Muttur, and Tubachi in Jamkhandi taluk as a precaution. Locals and livestock in Muttur village, which has been completely inundated, were moved to safer places.

The situation was also dire in Yadgir and Raichur districts as nearly 3lakh cusecs were released from Basava Sagara Narayanpur reservoir. NDRF teams are on standby at Lingasguru and Devadurga taluks in Raichur district. The Devadurga bridge near Huvinahedagi has been completely submerged. In Haveri district, all seven taluks, especially Hanagal, Shiggavi and Haveri, were hit by rain.
