Rain intensity to reduce in coming days: IMD

PANAJI: Heavy rain will continue in the state even as the orange alert for Goa ended on Thursday. The India meteorological department (IMD) in its forecast stated that heavy rainfall is very likely at a few places on August 7 with very heavy rainfall likely at isolated places. Winds of speed 35-45 km/hr are also very likely to accompany the rain.

The intensity of rainfall, however, is expected to gradually reduce, then on. Heavy rainfall is very likely at isolated places from August 8 to 10. The likely formation of yet another circulation over Bay of Bbengal is pointed out as the reason for continuing with the yellow alert till August 10, officials of IMD informed.

The incessant rain over the past couple of days left fields in the low-lying areas of St Estevam, Amona and parts of Sattari taluka inundated on Wednesday. The water receded by Thursday.

Some farmers incurred losses as polyhouses in some places and horticulture crops, like banana and coconut trees were damaged due to the strong winds. Substantial damage has also been caused to paddy, banana and arecanut crops in the villages of Hasapur, Chandel, Hankane and Ibrampur.

A cattle shed at Ibrampur was flooded on Wednesday forcing the dairy farmer to move 13 milking cows to a safer location.

“We are awaiting reports from across the state to assess the impact of the showers on the crops,” deputy director of agriculture Chintamani Perni said.
