Rains wreak havoc in Gadchiroli, 11 rescued

Chandrapur: Amid heavy rains wreaking havoc in Gadchiroli district since Monday, 11 persons, including two women, marooned in the flood waters were rescued in two instances.

Gadchiroli city also witnessed heavy waterlogging due to incessant rains during the last 24 hours.

As per reports, it started raining heavily in Gadchiroli since Monday evening resulting in flood-like situation in many areas of the city.

Waterlogging up to three to four feet was witnessed in the city. Traffic on Chamorshi Road, Isapur Road and Armori Road, apart from the main road in the city, was disrupted due to heavy waterlogging.

Meanwhile, 10 persons, including two women, caught in the flood waters near Gurwala village on Gadchiroli-Potegaon Road were rescued on Tuesday afternoon. These people were travelling from Potegaon to Gadchiroli in a four-wheeler. When they crossed Potfodi river near Gurwala, water level was touching the bridge. On the way, they came across an overflowing nullah and decided to return. When the reached near Potfodi river bridge, which they had crossed a few minutes ago, water had started flowing over the bridge by then.

Caught in the flood waters from both sides and water level rising by the minute, the travellers abandoned the vehicle and took shelter on a small hillock. One of the trapped persons called Gadchiroli police, who sent a team and rescued them to safety.

In another incident, a person who was trapped in the flood waters of Kumbhi nullah near Chandala village was also rescued by the team.

Gadchiroli circle recorded 168mm rainfall within 24 hours till Tuesday morning. All the rivers in the district are in spate and roads at 10 places have been cut off due to overflowing rivers and nullahs, officials informed.
