Rajasthan: Congress Leads in Local Body Elections, Sweeps 965 Wards

Jaipur: With the Congress leading the local body elections held for three Nagar Nigams, 17 Nagar Parishads and 29 Nagar Palikas in Rajasthan, chief minister Ashok Gehlot said early on Wednesday that the mandate is “in favour of his government.”

It must be noted that prior to the elections, the tussle between Gehlot and his deputy Sachin Pilot repeatedly made the headlines, which indicated that the party was on weak ground going into the polls.

Congress has won nine of the 17 Nagar Parishads and 11 of the 29 Nagar Palikas, while BJP has won one Nagar Nigam, one Nagar Parishad and four Nagar Palikas. Remaining seats were won by independents and other parties.

In total, the Congress won in 20 out of 49 local bodies and the BJP in six. Congress secured a majority in eight local bodies and the BJP in 10.

Congress has performed significantly well in Baran, Barmer, Banswara, Chittorgarh, Churu, Hanumangarh, Sikar, Jhunjhunu and Nagaur. BJP maintains its lead in Ajmer, Alwar, Bikaner, Jalore, Pali, Udaipur and Bharatpur.

Other Congress leaders have called  the win a rejection of BJP’s “Ayodhya” politics. “The results are a lesson for the BJP. People have rejected them for Article 370 and Ayodhya temple,” said state minister Pratap Singh Khachariyawas.

Polling for the Rajasthan local body elections was held on Saturday, to elect 2,105 ward councillors in 49 local bodies.
