Rajasthan farmer hangs self in Tonk, was under heavy debt

Jaipur: A 45-year-old farmer allegedly committed suicide in Tonk district by hanging himself. The family claims that he was under a heavy debt because of which he took his life. Police are still investigating but are unclear about the reason behind the suicide.

The farmer, Balu Meena, was found hanging in a room of his house.

His nephew found his body hanging on Saturday morning and informed the police and other family members, according to police officials. The incident is of Dooni Police Station in Tonk district.

Naresh Kanwer, SHO, Dooni police station said, “Initial investigation suggests that Balu Meena hanged himself on Friday night and his body was found the next morning. The post-mortem has been done and body handed over to the family.” While police did not find any suicide note, the family is claiming that the farmer took this step because of being debt-ridden. “The family told us they were under a debt of approximately Rs eight lakh, but we are still investigating that angle. Since no suicide note was found, it is too soon to confirm if the victim took his own life due to debt,” added the SHO.

This is the second farmer suicide in the state in this week alone. On May 22, another debt-ridden farmer allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree in state's Hanumangarh district within the premises of the Collectorate. According to police, a note about a bank loan was recovered from him. There have been many farmer suicides reported though according to the data provided by the CID (CB) through an RTI application, there have been no farmer’s suicides in 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2018 in Rajasthan. All the three suicides took place in 2015 and data is not yet available for 2019.
