Rajasthan HC seeks government response on city traffic condition

JAIPUR: A division bench of Rajasthan High Court on Thursday asked the state government, traffic police, JDA and JMC, of their plan to ensure smooth traffic in the city. The reply was sought while hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking a policy to ensure smooth traffic in the city.

The bench comprising Justice Alok Sharma and Justice Narendra Singh Dhadda also asked the petitioner Rizwan Hussain to provide the copy of the petition to S S Raghav, additional advocate general (AAG) and also to the lawyers of JDA and JMC.

Court also asked the respondents including the government, DCP (traffic), JDA and JMC on the efforts made by them and asked if they have any policy to improve poor traffic conditions in Jaipur. Lawyer S S Hora has also been appointed as amicus curiae by the court.

The orders were passed on a PIL filed by the petitioner Rizwan Hussain. Mahi Yadav, counsel for the petitioner, said, “Jaipur is a city of tourist importance and it is one of the most sought after places where 4,400 tourists visit every day. That rapid industrialization and the consequent urbanization has brought an unprecedented revolution in the growth of motor vehicles all over the world, India is no exception. Today, humans and his/her transport vehicles occupy a large share of the urban space which cause congestion, air and noise pollution; the resulting ill-effects and frustration have become the order of the day. We have requested the court that Jaipur requires designed, planned and well-developed traffic disciplines.”

The petitioner also maintained that during a survey, some irregularities were found in the traffic system of the city which included — traffic signals are not properly working, sign boards are 90% covered by useless advertisement, etc. Public transport in the city is very poor as the mini and government buses are in a poor condition, driving institutes/driving schools are unlimited, illegal and are without license–certificates from the statutory government departments, there are beggars on the traffic signals, cameras are not working, etc.
