Rajasthan: Pre-wedding ritual of Dalit groom held amid heavy security

ALWAR: The pre-wedding procession of a Dalit groom in Buteri village of Bansur tehsil of Alwar district was taken out amidst heavy police security on Thursday afternoon.

The groom, Ajay Meghwal , rode a mare amidst celebrations with cops standing guard on the street. The villagers claimed that it was for the first time in 72 years that a Dalit groom was able to ride a mare for his Bindori procession, a pre-wedding celebration.

The villagers said that about four days ago they had sought police security from the district administration after some local miscreants had threatened to disrupt the Bindori procession. Taking note of the plea, the cops from Bansur, Harsora, Behror and Tatarpur police stations were deployed for the celebrations. The local administration also held a meeting with members of all community. Accordingly, armed cops led by DSP rank officials and SDMs arrived at Meghwal’s house to ensure that celebrations go unhindered. The entire village turned into a fortress, with the groom being escorted by cops and police vehicles.

“The villagers feared that some locals might attack the procession and sought help from the district administration on November 18. We assured relatives of the groom to go ahead with wedding celebrations as cops will take care of the security arrangements,” said an official.
