Rajkot: Caught spitting mava? Be ready to shell out hefty fines

RAJKOT: Spitting on the roads while driving a vehicle will now land people of Rajkot in trouble. As such, spitting in public places is already an offence. However, it is difficult to identify an offender unless the health inspector is present at the spot.

The Rajkot Municipal Corporation ( RMC ) has now decided to use the network of CCTV cameras across the city to identify those spitting on roads from their vehicles.

The offender will get a memo at his address registered with the local Regional Transport Office (RTO).

The civic body, on Thursday, issued a notification in this regard. A first time offender will be fined Rs 250 and fine for second similar offence will be Rs 500. If it is repeated for the third time, he or she will be fined Rs 700.

RMC plans to utilize the network of over 900 cameras installed across the city under the Eye-Way Project. The output from the cameras is available with police as well as at the multi-activity centre at RMC.

According to the civic body officials, people sitting in the control room will identify the violator and with help of the vehicle registration number a memo will be sent to his/her address.

RMC commissioner Banchha Nidhi Pani said, “The notification has been issued to keep the city clean. The citizen can pay the fine amount online or offline at various collection centres. If a person fails to pay the amount, our staff will go to his residence to collect the fine. If the person still doesn’t pay, we will add this amount to his property tax.”

“If a person is found to be a habitual offender and seen spitting on roads despite being penalized we will request RTO to suspend his driving licence for some time,” Pani added.
