Rajkot half marathon to be back in 2019

RAJKOT: The Rajkot half marathon will be back this year after break of one year. The event was cancelled last year following allegations of corruption in organising the event made by the standing committee.

The half-marathon is being organised by Rotary Club Midtown on December 29, with support of the Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC).

The online and offline registration process began on Friday.

Last year the half-marathon was not organized because standing committee had alleged corruption in organising the event. The administration wing and political wing of RMC had come face to face over the the issue.

This year too RMC itself was organizing the event, but is providing support to the event which had become very popular among citizens.

Just like previous years, there will be three categories— 21km, 10km and 5km. The event chairman Divyesh Aghera said, “The route of the half-marathon is yet to be finalized by IAAF (International Association of Athletics Federation). It has is a very popular event among the citizens and we are getting very good response for it.” He added that participant from across the country and abroad will be participating in the event.

Aghera said that for online registration the website has been changed. “If someone visits the half-marathon website developed by RMC, her/she will be redirected to a new portal,” he added.

RMC commissioner Udit Agrwal said, “We have allowed them to use our portal and we are supporting the event. We have to work out how exactly RMC will be able to facilitate the event.”

The Association of Self Finance Schools and Saurashtra University have already declared support for the event and assured that their students will participate in the event.
