Rapid transit trains connecting north and south Tripura launched

AGARTALA: The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) on Thursday launched a rapid transit Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) train service connecting northern Dharmanagar with Sabroom via Agartala. Initially, four pairs of DEMU trains have been introduced to connect the northern and southern parts of the state. Three pairs of DEMU trains would run between Agartala and Sabroom from Friday and one pair connecting Sabroom with Dharmanagar via Agartala.

The NFR authority has also decided to extend the existing passenger train service between Agartala and Belonia up to Sabroom. NFR officials said apart from long-distance trains, all the northern parts of the state are served by at least four trains that connect Dharmanagar and Agartala. Since southern towns at present are connected by only one passenger train, the newly introduced DEMU trains would help solve that crisis, they added. People from northern parts of Tripura have, however, said they need at least two more DEMU trains from Agartala. They further stated that due to connectivity problems, people from the North Tripura and Unokoti districts prefer to move Silchar for business and treatment purposes despite knowing that better facilities are available in Agartala.
