Rare cardiac surgery conducted in Jodhpur

JODHPUR: In a first in western Rajasthan , the cardiology department of S N Medical College conducted an aortic root enlargement surgery successfully. The enlargement paved the way for replacement of the valves of the patient, who had serious trouble in breathing. Cardiac surgeon Subhash Balara said the patient Thakaram (24) from Barmer had not only the two valves of the heart broken down, but the aorta had also shrunken.

“This had led to decreased blood flow to the heart, making it difficult for patient to breath,” Balara said.

But without making enough space in the aorta, it was not possible to replace the valves. To deal with the complexity, the heart of the patient was shifted to the heart lung machine and the aorta was enlarged using some part of the aorta itself. “After enlargement of the aorta, the valves of the patient were replaced with the new valves,” Balara said adding that the patient was kept under deep observation for three days and will now be discharged in 2-3 days.

Principal of the college, S S Rathore said, earlier, patients with such condiiton were referred to other centres, as there was no facility for such surgeries. He said the aorta is the major blood carrier vessel to the heart and has the flow of blood with huge pressure. Any lacunae in the procedure could threaten the life of patient.
