Rare earth minerals glitter on MP's road to tomorrow

Indore: Madhya Pradesh government will explore opportunities in rare earth minerals in Jhabua and Betul districts.

The decision was taken after vast prospects were found during exploration of rare earth metals.

“Chief minister Kamal Nath has already held discussions with the Centre agencies.

In view of vast opportunities in Madhya Pradesh, the state has decided to promote mining of rare earth minerals,” chief secretary SR Mohanty said.

Madhya Pradesh has been known for mining of diamonds, limestone, gold, manganese, iron ore and bauxite. Now the government is also focusing on mining of rare earth minerals including palladium, platinum, thorium and uranium, among others, he said.

“In near future, you will see rare earth minerals contributing to the state’s economy,” Mohanty added.

Atomic Minerals Directorate for Exploration and Research had conducted explorations in Madhya Pradesh and found prospects for uranium in Betul district.

Madhya Pradesh is the only diamond producing state. It’s the leading producer of copper concentrate, pyrophyllite and diaspore. The state hosts country's 68% diaspore, 41% molybdenum ore, 46% pyrophyllite, 32% diamond, 29% copper ore, 17% rock phosphate, 16% each of manganese ore and fireclay and 11% ochre resources.
