Refurbished Guntur-Tenali railway line starts its 'electrifying' journey

Vijayawada: In a major boost to the state’s rail connectivity, South Central Railway (SCR) commissioned the refurbished Guntur-Tenali double railway line on Friday. This may serve as an important step to relieve the pressure on the routes connecting the two Telugu states with states like Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Doubling and electrification was taken up on the route which intially had a single-track line.

In recent years, there has been a huge increase of railway traffic in this belt due to diversion of several long distance trains running between Vijayawada and Tenali and the gradual increase of train services in the Nadikudi-Guntur-Tenali-Vijayawada route. Also, the freight traffic from Guntur towards Chennai and further south has increased enormously.

At present, trains run in this section at 125 % of section capacity. In order to cope with further increase of traffic in the Guntur-Tenali route, doubling and electrification workd were taken up. Railway officials explained that the Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) executed the project within the targeted time.

Repalle-Secunderabad passenger (train no. 57652) was the first train that was made to run on the refurbished track on Friday. Officials said that new station buildings have also been constructed at Vejendla and Sangam Jagarlamudi stations.

In terms of safety enhancement, modern signalling system was provided to the section. Construction of road over bridges and road under bridges in place of level crossing gates were also done. Two major bridges and 39 minor bridges have been constructed in the section.

Enhanced connectivity in the section will add strength to revenue generation of railways in terms of harnessing the potential of mineral rich Palnadu region to transport its produce to any part of the country.

“Commissioning of the new line will give impetus to rail services in the zone in general and the capital city region of Andhra Pradesh state in particular,” general manager of SCR Gajanan Mallya pointed out while speaking on the occasion.
