Release vehicles only after getting regn number: RTO

Ludhiana: The regional transport office (RTO) has launched a crackdown on authorised dealers for rolling out vehicles without registration number on road.

The transport department is inspecting the records of dealers to find out when they sold vehicles and got their registration numbers. As of now, the regional transport department has inspected seven authorised dealerships in the city and found that five of them were not maintaining any record.

The development came after the state transport department directed the regional transport office to inspect dealers and send the report to them. As per- the officials of the department, there are around 150 dealers operating in the jurisdiction of the regional transport office. The department has sent directions to all of them to maintain the record or be ready to face the music. Officials said that such violation can attract a fine of more that Rs 1 lakh.

“It has come to fore that the new vehicles have been plying on roads without the registration number which is a violation of rules which states that the sold vehicle cannot be released until its registration is complete. Besides, it is also mandatory to maintain a record of the vehicle's registration date,” said an official of the department.

“We have received directions from the head office to inspect records of dealers. Acting on the directions, we inspected seven dealerships last week. Only five had records of vehicles’ registration dates,” he added.

Another official of the department said sometimes, such vehicles which are yet to get the registration number meet with accidents and then the owner cannot be identified. Besides, owners also struggle to get insurance claim with incomplete registration. Therefore, it is mandatory that vehicles should be given to people only after they get the registration number, he added.

Confirming the development, assistant regional transport officer (ARTO), Abhishek Bansal, said, “We have sent a report of the inspection drive to the head office. Besides, we have also issued an order to all dealers operating in the city to release vehicles only when they have the registration number.”

“They must consider this order as the last warning. We will again conduct an inspection and if anyone is found violating the rules, strict action will be taken, which would include levying of a hefty penalty,” he added.
